Join us for the inaugural Hurston/Wright Alumni Weekend, a special in-person gathering taking place from July 5th to 7th, 2024. Celebrating over 30 years of culturally significant support for Black writers, along with the esteemed Writers Week/end retreats and diverse public programs, this reunion marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of our organization’s impactful history in the literary world as we approach our 35th year.

We invite all alumni to reconnect and participate in a variety of activities, including social gatherings, exclusive workshops, and engaging panels and sessions featuring writers like DaMaris Hill, simone banks, V. Efua Prince, Monifa Love, and more.

The weekend commences with a memorable dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Washington on Friday evening, offering a delightful night of fellowship while also supporting our organization through fundraising efforts.

Join us for an unforgettable evening aboard the Spirit of Washington and show your support for the Hurston/Wright Foundation! Reconnect with fellow summer fellows, make new connections, and expand your writing community while enjoying the scenic views of Washington, D.C.

Your evening includes:

  • a  Buffet-Styled Dinner, DJ Entertainment, 
  • a 3-hour cruise from Southwest Waterfront/DC Wharf to Georgetown, offering stunning skyline views of the Washington National Monuments.

Boarding begins at 6pm, and the ship sets sail at 7pm. 

Join us for a day of panels and sessions geared toward building your writer’s toolkit, sharing and connecting. Alumni panels featuring some of acclaimed former fellows as well as sessions around finding an agent, implementing self care and submitting to writing opportunities are featured throughout the day.

A special workshop by Writer-in-Residence, simone banks, will be open for registration (first come/first served) for registered attendees only. This multigenre workshop will involve a small excursion to the nearby United States Botanic Gardens. Early-bird registrants will receive opportunity to register for workshop in May.

Closing activities include continental breakfast and a keynote address from a very special guest.
