This website will allow you to review the sponsorship levels and access the PayPal payment buttons.  The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation’s annual Zora/ Legacy Awards celebration is scheduled for October 9, 2026, in Washington, D.C This prestigious event honors the continuing literary achievements of Black writers   

  • Ishmael Reed, a celebrated multi-genre writer and activist, 
  • Dr. Carol Anderson, a distinguished historian, 
  • Troy Johnson, a literary advocate and founder of the African American Literature Book Club. 
  • Dr. Mary Frances Berry, a pioneering scholar and activist, and professor

Additionally, we will unveil the 2026 winners of the Legacy Merit Awardees and the Zora/ Legacy Awards for the best books by Black authors, further reinforcing our commitment to celebrating excellence in Black literature. They will be announced in the fall.

The Legacy Awards program attracts a diverse group of luminaries, including renowned authors, publishing professionals, arts patrons, educators, and activists. This event serves as a unique opportunity for writers to connect with key industry figures while celebrating literary accomplishments and fostering a greater appreciation for Black writers. Previous honorees have included literary giants such as Ernest J. GainesAlice WalkerNikki Giovanni, and Claudia Rankine as well as recent honorees such as “Queen Sugar” author Natalie Baszile and “James” author Percival Everett — voices that continue to influence the global literary landscape.

As a sponsor, your support would ensure that this unforgettable celebration continues and expands. The Legacy Awards are not only a tribute to literary achievement, but also a crucial part of the foundation’s year-round work to mentor and elevate Black writers. Since its founding in 1991, our programs have reached thousands of aspiring writers. The award-winning authors also lead writing workshops, master classes, and public readings, fostering a new generation of storytellers. Our college writing award, which has recognized talents like Tayari JonesMitchell S. Jackson, and Brit Bennett, has helped launch the careers of over 80 students, with many going on to publish their own works.

The Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards program honors Black writers in the United States and around the globe for literary achievement. Introduced in 2001, the Legacy Award is the first national award presented to Black writers by a national organization of Black writers. The Legacy Award is awarded to published book authors in the categories of Fiction, Debut Fiction and Poetry.
